Professor Mwandumba is a Clinician Scientist, the Deputy Director & Head of the Immunology Research Group of the Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme (MLW), University of Malawi College of Medicine. He is also a Consultant Physician at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi.

Prof. Mwandumba studied medicine at the University of Zimbabwe School of Medicine and specialised in General (Internal) Medicine and Infectious Diseases in Liverpool, UK.

His research focuses on understanding the effects of HIV on pulmonary immunity and predisposition to respiratory infections, especially tuberculosis. He is President of the Immunology Society of Malawi (ISM) and President of the Federation of African Immunological Societies (FAIS).  Prof. Mwandumba’s research is supported by funding from the Wellcome Trust, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, National Institutes of Health and the Medical Research Council (UK) through the MRC/DFID African Research Leader Award. 

Prof. Mwandumba is the Treasurer & Head of Finance Committee of the East Central and southern Africa College of Physicians (ECSACOP)
