Dr. Irene Andia Biraro

MBChB, MMED, PGD-M&E, PhD

Dr. Andia is a physician and senior lecturer at the Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. She is also an Honorary Associate Scientist at the MRC/UVRI &LSHTM Uganda Research Unit.

She has a strong background in academia and is passionate about medical education, in particular the impact of mentorship and quality improvement in post graduate training.

Dr. Andia has expertise in infectious diseases and immunology, with a special interest in tuberculosis and its co-infections/co-morbidities. She is currently building her research career and focus to investigate the epidemiological and immunological interactions between tuberculosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This work will be one of the first in East Africa to highlight the magnitude and risk of tuberculosis infection among diabetes patients, and the potential for future interventions to prevent TB reactivation among this vulnerable population.
